Don't wait until it's too late

06-Feb-2017

Every February, Bowel Cancer Australia run their annual campaign, Don't wait until it's too late, raising awareness of the importance of early detection of bowel cancer.

Bowel Cancer is Australia's second biggest cancer killer and affects both men and women, old and young, and can often develop without any warning signs. However, 90% of bowel cancer cases can be treated if detected early.

Every year 15,000 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer and the disease claims the life of over 4000 men and women annually. Staggeringly, this translates to 30% of all bowel cancer cases. The campaign stresses that early detection is key to improving survival rates of bowel cancer.

What are the signs?

  • Going to the toilet more often, or having looser more diarrhoea-like movements for several weeks
  • Blood and / or a change in appearance of stool
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • A lump or mass in your abdomen
